Despite my initial reservations, I’m growing more comfortable with the Bobcats using their 9th overall pick on Donatas Motiejunas, especially with Tristan Thompson as a consolation prize if Donatas turns out to be a bust.
While very talented, an inconsistent freshman season has him slipping to 19th overall in this mock draft. Though many draft boards have him projected has a top 10 pick, his limitations offensively could leave him overlooked, which would be a great break for the Bobcats.
Thompson offers the Bobcats a chance for some more stability at the 4. Najera is reliable, but 34, and Tyrus Thomas is explosive, but inconsistent. Thompson needs to add some upper body strength to a very sturdy lower body and core, but I see no reason he can’t contribute to this team very early on.
I’m not sure Thompson will ever be a big time scorer at this level, but he has shown the ability, at times to face up and attack the basket. If his offensive rebounding capabilities carry over from his Big 12 performance, he should some day be able to average double figures.
I’m confident Tristan Thompson should be able to at least contribute consistently on the glass. That being said, his potential upsides would make him a steal this late in the draft.
