It has been an offseason full of head scratching decisions for the Bobcats front office with the signing of Sherron Collins, Kwame Brown and Shaun Livingston.
Most NBA followers would question the offseason moves that Bobcats owner Michael Jordan has made this summer, but adding low cost players could prove to silence the naysayers if Brown, Collins, Livingston and the rest of the offseason cast can mesh.
Darius Miles is just one of those veterans looking to hone up his skills following a year of absence from professional basketball, after a knee injury sidelined him for the 2009-2010 season.
The knee injury in question was so severe it was almost deemed career ending by the NBA. The Bobcats see a hard worker determined to secure a spot on the roster after a good showing at the teams summer free agent workouts.
The Bobcats have extended an invitation to the 28-year old veteran to join them at their preseason camp in Fort Mill, S.C. for a chance to claw his way onto the Charlotte depth chart with a non-guaranteed contract.
Miles also comes with some baggage off the court due to a substance abuse policy violation in 2008, when he was still a member of the Portland Trail Blazers.
Miles throughout the course of his career has averaged 10. 1 points and 4.9 rebounds per game in his nine injury shortened seasons in the Association.
The last time Miles has played a full season was in his rookie and sophomore seasons with the Los Angeles Clippers dating back to 2000-2002.
Miles appeared in six preseason games in 2008 for the Celtics and then was released on the grounds of the substance abuse policy. It has been a rough and rocky road for the 29-year-old veteran drafted out of high school by the Los Angeles Clippers in 2000, as the third overall pick behind Kenyon Martin and Stromile Swift.
The Trail Blazers threatened the other 29 teams in the league saying that if they offered Miles a contract that the team would sue because other teams could sign him to free up some tax and salary cap restrictions.
Miles will give the Bobcats some much needed depth in the front court at the forward position, if he can produce like he did prior to the injury, he may prove to give Charlotte a solid weapon off the bench.
