Decision time: Should Augustin go pro?
If the South Regional final against Memphis showed anything, it's Texas point guard D.J. Augustin should come back to school for his junior season.
Earlier this season, Augustin was projected as a lottery pick.
How much did a poor showing in the NCAA Tournament hurt Augustin's draft stock? Augustin shot 34.5% (20-for-58) in four tournament games. If you take away his 10-for-18 performance against Stanford in the Sweet Sixteen, Augustin shot 25% (10-for-40) in three games.
For the season, D.J. Augustin averaged 19.2 points and 5.8 assists to lead the Longhorns to a school-record 31 victories.
At 6-foot, Augustin was unable to compensate for his size disadvantage against bigger defenders, lacking a quick first step and a quick shot.
At least one NBA draft site has Augustin projected to go No. 23 overall (to Seattle) if he decides to leave school early. He is listed as the sixth-best point guard in the draft behind Derrick Rose (Memphis), Jerryd Bayless (Arizona), Russell Westbrook (UCLA), Darren Collison (UCLA) and Eric Gordon (Indiana).
Augustin comes from a well-grounded family that will be instrumental in his decision making. His mom is a teacher and academics are a top priority. He was named an Academic All-American this season, along with first-team All-America and winner of the Cousay Award, presented to the nation's top point guard.
Augustin told reporters at Monday's Cousy Award presentation in San Antonio that he will make a decision within the next week or two. He has until April 27 to submit his name for the draft.
Should Augustin leave early for the NBA or stay for another season?
