Augustin wins Cousy Award for nation's top point guard

Longhorn sophomore D.J. Augustin on Thursday won the Bob Cousy Award, presented annually to the nation's top college point guard.

D.J. Augustin will receive the award Monday morning in San Antonio during the NCAA Final Four.

The Cousy Award, named for the Hall of Fame guard who played for the Boston Celtics, has been handed out for five years. The previous winners are Jameer Nelson of St. Joseph's, Raymond Felton of North Carolina, Dee Brown of Illinois and Acie Law of Texas A&M.

Augustin averaged 19.2 points and 5.8 assists a game this season for the Longhorns, who set a school record with 31 victories before losing to Memphis in the South Regional finals on Sunday.

Augustin emerged from a list of 16 finalists to win the Cousy Award. Augustin already has been named first-team all-America by several news outlets, including the Associated Press.

He is one of five finalists for the John R. Wooden player of the year award.

Texas assistant up for job

Ken McDonald will interview for the job as head basketball coach at Western Kentucky this weekend, maybe as early as today, the Longhorn assistant said Thursday.

McDonald, who served as an assistant coach for five years, expects to be one of "a handful" of candidates.

"It's a very attractive job," McDonald said. "I spent five years there. It has such a strong tradition, obviously. And it's attractive because of the leadership there. The president (Gary Ransdell) and athletic director (Wood Selig) are good people."
