DJ Augustin was a preseason honors and Academic All-America candidate. DJ Augustin was one of the top returning point guards in the Big 12 Conference, if not the nation. Honorable Mention All-America choice by The Associated Press and a consensus Freshman All-American last year. DJ Augustin led the Big 12 Conference and ranked fourth nationally in assists (6.7 apg). DJ Augustin started all 35 games as a freshman. DJ Augustin led the team in 3-point field goal percentage (.441) and ranked third on the squad in scoring (14.4 ppg). DJ Augustin spent the first session of summer school going head-to-head against current Toronto Raptors point guard and former UT star T.J. Ford (2002-03) in pickup games, as Ford returned to campus to attend classes. DJ Augustin was one of 10 collegiate point guards selected to participate in the first-ever Steve Nash Skills Academy, a three-day camp emphasizing skill development and individual improvement held during the last weekend in June at Kean University (Union, N.J.). McDonald’s All-American in 2006.
DJ Augustin was one of seven freshman to join the Longhorn basketball program for the 2006-07 season. DJ Augustin started all 35 games in the season as the point guard for the Longhorns, averaging 14.4 points and 6.7 assists per game. For his contributions, DJ Augustin was named to both the All-Big 12 Second Team and the Big 12 All-Rookie Team by the coaches and Associated Press. Kevin Durant (former Teammate) was quoted as saying " I don't think I would be where I am today without DJ Augustin". Also, the Texas Longhorns play-by-play analyst stated " Man, DJ Augustin makes everyone who he plays around better".
DJ Augustin , along with Texas A&M Aggies player Joseph Jones, was featured on the front cover of the November 15, 2007 issue of Sports Illustrated.
DJ Augustin is successful academically. In the fall 2007 semester, he achieved a 4.0 GPA, raising his cumulative GPA to a 3.64. On February 27, 2008, DJ Augustin was named first-team Academic All-America by the College Sports Information Directors of America. DJ Augustin became the second Texas Longhorn basketball player to achieve the honor, following Jim Krivacs, who received it in 1979.
